Orient had a speed of around 15 knots. Her engines were the same size as NDL’s Elbe the first of NDLs Rivers class which were built at Elder/Fairfield during the 1880s.
From 1899 to 1902 Orient served as a transport during the Boer War. After the war Orient resumed Orient service until 1910 when she was scrapped 31 years after launch.
